The explanation for this exercise is very easy however this can be a tough move. Jump up and hold yourself in the top position of the pull up. Make sure your chin is over the bar at the top position and lower yourself as slowly as possible. Try to hold the top position for as long as you can before lowering yourself. For example, a good 2 to 3 seconds in the top position and a good slow 3 seconds lowering yourself. Once you get good at this try and jump up and pull your chest to the bar before holding at the new top position. I think you will find this to be pretty tough!
I tried out lots of different picks and plectrums, gauges, thickness until I found what worked for me! I have stuck to the same pick, same size, good grip and same gauge. I find a 1mm tortex blue pick works great for me as I am not a heavy pick player, although everyone is different, so find what works for you and feels good. Stick with the same type of pick!

Band assisted pull ups allow you to copy the exact movement better than an assisted pull up machines. If your local gym does not have bands but has the machine go ahead and use it. It is still an effective way to improve yourself. Take your band and loop it around the bar. Pull it through so that the band is tight. Grab the bar with an overhand grip about shoulder width. You can either place one or both of your knees in the loop of the band. I myself, prefer one knee. Now you are ready to perform the exercise. The band assists you the most at the start. The higher you pull yourself up the less assistance you receive.
Learn pick and finger style, to be a great bass player you should play both! However there is nothing wrong in playing the way you want to play bass, get your sound, and enjoy the style and technique that is for you. Playing with the pick is what I enjoyed and a style I have worked close with.
